Before you were born, I set you apart

I met Sarah West many years ago when I fell in love with her amazing style and eye for photography. Since then, she has captured my family time and time again and my house is covered in photo's that she has taken of my boys throughout the years. Sarah and I have worked together on a number of projects, and I've loved watching her family grow through the precious gift of adoption!

Here is her story of how Emmett came into their lives and brought with him a bundle of blessings!

It was one year ago that we found out our Eddie’s birthparents were expecting again. One month later we had agreed to adopt, found out the gender and were able to see our newest little boy move on an ultrasound for the very first time. Cue fireworks, tears and hearts bursting out of chests. What a blessed journey it has been to anticipate his arrival, experience his birth and watch as sweet Emmett has taken over our hearts and become a part of our family.

Although Emmett is our fifth child, he is a first in so many ways. Never before have we felt what it is like to witness our baby’s growth and development pre-birth. Thanks to the openness of his birthparents, I was able to be there for ultrasounds, hear his heartbeat and track his progress at doctor’s appointments. I obsessively followed along every milestone with the “What to Expect” app and kept Cam updated with his growth in sizes of fruit. I was able to be in the room for his birth and Cam and I both stayed at the hospital with him and his bio parents.

Thanks to the help of a fellow adoptive mom, my doctor, the local health unit and supportive friends and family, I was able to breastfeed Emmett for his first three months. Talk about experiencing something I never thought I’d experience.

We were also given the immense honour of choosing his first name. Naming a child was always something I dreamed about and coveted in other people. But I didn’t realize it would feel so stressful! And that as soon as you do it you second guess and hope you made an okay choice! We chose the name Emmett a life-time ago when we were first dreaming of starting a family. Getting to use it is something I had all but given up hope we’d ever be able to do.

Through Emmett we have gotten to experience many dreams come true. We are overwhelmed by our Father’s extravagant love. We are also so thankful that we could be part of God’s blessing to Emmett. He has four older siblings who love him so much and a whole extended family of people to pour into his life as he grows.

Emmett is sugar sweet, quiet and observant, cuddly, not a great eater, bright-eyed and curious, our worst sleeper yet, content, easy-going (except when eating and sleeping) and outrageously adorable. We are in love. Our Emmy, Emsters, Moon-Eyes, little E. We are so happy you are here!

There’s no piece of that reflection that doesn’t include the gratefulness we feel for one of the most special gifts 2017 gave us: Emmett.

The beauty in this story is that we could never have written it on our own, and yet we are so thankful for every step that brought us to this place.
