In just under a year of running our business I have learned SO much. We have tweaked almost every part of Baby Octopi since launching and just when I think we have things perfected, it gets even better. Read along to hear more about how our Octopus production has evolved and meet the woman who has played a huge role in taking my vision for the Octopus and turning it in to the product you see in our shop today!
I love to crochet and Baby Octopi started with me making each and every Octopus we sent out! This worked well until the demand of running a growing company and creating all the products myself become to much for me to handle. At this point I pursued help and connected with a manufacturer who started creating our Octopus in large quantities. The Octopus were well made, but we had little control over the materials being used and we had to take production outside of Canada, which I wasn't happy about.
I continued to explore the best way to create the highest quality product in a way that aligned with our company's values. I found myself at a picnic playgroup with a group of moms and was talking through our business model with a friend when she made a suggestion that changed the course of our business in the best possible way. She mentioned that Heidi (a mutual friend) was amazing with her hands and could crochet quickly and beautifully.
I gave it a bit of thought, but didn't really consider it seriously and wasn't sure I was in a position to bring on another team member to Baby Octopi so early on. A few days after that I found myself at another park near our house (#momlife) and it just so happened that Heidi was there with her kids. We started chatting and I realized quickly that what seemed like a random coincidence was in fact an appointment set up by God and I NEEDED to pursue the idea of having her join our team. I put out some feelers and mentioned the idea to see if maybe she would consider it. Before we had even talked through all the details Heidi responded with an immediate and confident YES!
I gave Heidi a sample of the current Octopus and some sort of pattern that I attempted to write down from all the stitches that were floating around in my head. Somehow, Heidi took all of that and created the Octopus that we sell today!
It is her talent, commitment to our vision and fast fingers that have brought so many Baby Octopi's in to your homes and the hearts and hands of your babies!
I met Heidi a few years earlier when our kids started school together and ended up in the same kindergarten class. I introduced myself to her and Rick when I noticed the 'I am second' shirt that he was wearing and asked if they were christians. Since then, Heidi has become one of my favourite people and a huge reason that our business has thrived and I have maintained my sanity!
Heidi grew up in Texas and moved to Alberta with her family when she was 14. It was in Calgary that she graduated Mount Royal University with a degree in finance, met her husband Rick and later had their first son Nolan. In 2012 they found their way to St.Thomas, Ontario (and I am SOOO glad they did). Now, Heidi is a stay at home mom with Nolan (6) and Parker (3).
She has been crocheting since she was 8 years old and has also picked up knitting along the way. She also exercises her creative side through volunteering at her church—on the drama team and with the high school youth!
Heidi still makes every Octopus that we sell by hand and does so right from her home, which has now become a core value of our company. Offering flexible employment to moms is important to us and, as we add new products to our shop it continues to be our preferred method of product creation!
In fact, we are currently recruiting another employee to take on a sewing project for an exciting product we will be launching soon! If you are amazing at working with knit fabric, want to work from your own home and own a reliable sewing machine and serger, you could be a fit for our team!
To apply simply email the following information, along with some photos of finished sewing projects you've done in the last year to email@example.com.
Application Deadline is May 1st 2018.
